what is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession that helps individuals of all ages to engage in meaningful activities that support their physical, mental, and emotional health. Occupational therapists use a holistic and integrative approach to promote health and well-being, taking into account the unique needs and circumstances of each individual.
Hand Therapy
When it comes to hand injuries, occupational therapy can help individuals regain their ability to perform daily activities that require the use of their hands. This may involve exercises to improve strength, range of motion, and dexterity, as well as the use of specialized tools or devices to support hand function. Occupational therapists may also provide education and training on proper hand positioning and ergonomic techniques to prevent further injury or strain.
ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING
Occupational therapy can help individuals develop or regain the skills necessary to perform self-care tasks such as dressing, grooming, and bathing. Occupational therapists may work with individuals to identify any barriers to independent living and provide strategies and modifications to overcome them.
HOME ASSESSMENTS
Regarding home assessment, occupational therapists can evaluate an individual’s living environment, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, to identify potential safety hazards and suggest modifications to improve accessibility and independence. This may involve recommendations for adaptive equipment, such as grab bars or shower seats, as well as modifications to the layout or design of the space to better support the individual’s needs.
Overall, occupational therapy aims to support individuals in achieving their goals and maintaining their independence in all aspects of life, including self-care, work, leisure, and social participation. By taking a holistic and integrative approach, occupational therapists address the physical, cognitive, emotional, and environmental factors that impact an individual’s ability to engage in meaningful activities and live a fulfilling life.
What happens in a therapy session?
Occupational therapy home sessions are a great option for those seeking convenience and privacy. The therapist visits the patient’s home to assess their functional abilities and environment, observe daily activities, and recommend modifications for improved accessibility and safety. Patients can prepare by ensuring a safe and accessible home, discussing their medical history, concerns, and goals with the therapist, and preparing a list of questions. The therapist’s goal is to help patients achieve their goals and independence at home through modifications and education. Home sessions provide convenience and privacy, making it a great option for those looking to receive therapy in the comfort of their own home.
What does occupational therapy look like when done in the home?
During an occupational therapy treatment session, the therapist evaluates the patient’s hand condition and develops a personalized treatment plan. The session may involve exercises, stretching, massage, or modalities such as heat or cold therapy to improve hand function and reduce pain or inflammation. The therapist also educates the patient on proper techniques and strategies to continue progress at home, and regularly assesses progress to adjust the treatment plan as needed.
What types of treatments do you perform?
Occupational therapists perform various treatments to improve hand function and reduce pain or inflammation. Here are some common treatments:
- Exercises: Your OT may prescribe exercises to improve range of motion, strength, and dexterity in the hand and fingers.
- Manual Therapy: This involves hands-on techniques such as massage, mobilization, and stretching to improve hand function and reduce pain or stiffness.
- Modalities: OTs may use modalities such as heat or cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, or laser therapy to reduce pain or inflammation and improve healing.
- Splinting: Hand therapy specialized OTs may use orthotic devices or splints to support and protect the hand during healing.
- Education: We educate patients on proper techniques and strategies to improve hand function and reduce pain or inflammation, as well as how to prevent future injury or complications.
Hand Wellness OT uses a combination of treatments tailored to the patient’s specific needs and goals to improve hand function and reduce pain or inflammation.
I don’t have much equipment or space at home, is that a problem?
Not a problem. We bring all the equipment with us. Occupational therapy is about using what you have in your environment to improve your functional abilities and achieve your goals.
